Christie Cobbson, a proud Burundian, began her journey at six when her family fled Rwanda and traveled for months on foot to reach safety in a refugee camp. From forming close friendships in school to supporting organizations that foster belonging, Christie believes that “good friends and a supportive system shouldn’t make you change who you are to fit in.” Her story teaches us the importance of community and staying true to oneself.

Mexican immigrant and DACA advocate Monse Anleu faced challenges growing up between two cultures. Feeling embarrassed by her heritage, she hid her Mexican roots to fit in with her peers. As she grew older, she embraced her story and began sharing it with pride. “Each story holds its uniqueness, and that’s what gives it power,” Monse reflects. Now a pillar in the Grand Rapids Latinx community, Monse encourages others to embrace their authentic selves and share their stories to inspire and educate.
Nikki Castro-Hernandez: Navigating Corporate America
Nikki Castro-Hernandez’s journey to corporate success began with mentorship through Building Bridges, a program of the Grand Rapids Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. With the guidance of a mentor, Nikki stepped out of her comfort zone and learned to value her unique perspective. Now working at Steelcase, Nikki embraces being the only Latina in many spaces, viewing it as an opportunity for her voice to be heard. Her advice: “Success is not just about income; it’s about mental health, well-being, and always asking, ‘What do I need to learn next?’”
Dan: Breaking Barriers to Become a Professional Engineer
Dan’s story is one of perseverance. From a family of Dutch laborers and Peruvian workers, Dan became the first in his family to earn the title of professional engineer. His success symbolizes the breaking of generational barriers and the power of determination.
