Safija's Altruism - WomenGreatness

During Women's History Month, ImmiGreatness is taking this opportunity to shine a light on immigrant women who've made a real difference through our initiative #WomenGreatness. Esmina submitted her story as she celebrates Safija's altruism in aiding incoming refugees and unwavering support, honoring the remarkable accomplishments of women like her aunt who inspire with love and wisdom. Reminiscing on Esmina’s treasured relationship with her aunt Safija, fondly referred to as Dada, she recounts the profound influence Safija had on her life's journey. From their immigration to the States to her initial steps toward financial independence, Safija's resilience and mentorship ignited her aspirations.

“From my earliest memories, a significant portion of my childhood was spent with my aunt, Safija, affectionately known to me as Dada. Our journey to the States in 1995 marked the beginning of a deep bond that shaped my upbringing. Safija wasn't just my favorite person; she was my trusted confidante and the embodiment of inspiration. Her guidance instilled in me valuable lessons, with resilience and diligence standing out as her defining qualities. As my role model, she ignited within me the drive to pursue my aspirations with unwavering determination. It was under her influence that I embarked on my first steps towards financial independence, saving every dollar earned from babysitting in an envelope she provided. These savings paved the way for unforgettable experiences, such as my first visit to Disney World, a cherished memory we shared together. Beyond our personal adventures, Safija's altruism extended to aiding incoming refugees, a cause close to both of our hearts. Her commitment to helping others navigate the challenges of resettlement mirrors the compassion and empathy that have always defined her character. Spending weekends and holiday breaks in her company provided solace and a sense of belonging. In Safija, I found not only a beloved family member but also a beacon of hope and support, guiding me through life's journey with unwavering love and wisdom.”
