Did you forget to rest during break?

Though we just came back from holiday festivities and a break from school/work, it’s easy to feel like you need a break from the break. That’s because it is easy to forget what a break is all about, resting. When your mind is preoccupied with your future, your needs, and others’ needs, a break can fly by without actually resting. Try some or all of these things below to give yourself a pause routinely.

  1. Get off your phone: Play UNO or any other card or board game with a friend or family member that you usually just scroll through your phone with.

  2. Listen to a podcast: You can find a podcast about anything these days. Whether you want to meditate, learn, or have a good laugh, you are bound to find your type of podcast.

  3. Go outside: Yes, it’s cold. But bundle up and indulge in a peaceful walk with yourself.

  4. Wordle: Fine. If you can’t get off your phone, do something productive with it. Do the Wordle or crossword puzzle of the day. The New York Times offers many different mind games.

  5. What would your younger self want to do? Make your inner child happy! Not only is it amusing, but it’s healing.

Remember that rest means something different to everybody, so whatever it means to you, do it. There will never be “time”, so do it here and there to let yourself enjoy the art of Il dolce far niente, “the sweetness of doing nothing”. You deserve it.
